Up until last weekend, our approach to grocery shopping would be this:
- Decide what we want for dinner.
- Make list of items we'll need (or forgo list, and agree upon brand of frozen pizza, with or without pepperoni).
- Drive to Dominick's (or to Jewel if something we needed that night happened to be on sale).
- Buy items we need for dinner, and possibly other impulse items or items we know we are in dire need of (toilet paper, garlic, cereal).
- Drive home, make dinner.
- Repeat, returning to grocery store night after night, and sometimes several times in one day.
We decided that we needed to try a real grocery shopping trip.
So Monday night (Columbus Day), when Luke got home from work, that's what we did. We used our Joy of Cooking cookbook's list of what a kitchen should be stocked with, and the weekly grocery store ads to make a list, and then we hit the stores.
Believe it or not, we had a pretty good time calculating the best deals, deciding what items are worth buying brand names of, and buying in bulk.
11 lbs. of pasta, 4 lbs of meat and lots of other miscellaneous items later, we are pretty well set for a while, and should only need to make periodic trips to the grocery store to supplement what we've already got!
A small feat for some, we know, but we were pretty proud of ourselves. Check out our fridge, post-shopping:

nicely done! we know it's not easy to keep a well-stocked fridge (or at least not always easy to consume everything we've bought before it goes bad and needs to be tossed). i think a lot of it is just finding what works for you, but a weekly trip to the store will most likely save you money, even if it seems as though it's on very expensive trip.
happy four-monthiversary!
you've got nothing on my fridge dear, nothing at all. with two growing elementary kids and a hungry toddler plus a foodie husband, our fridge is so full that it's hard to close without rearranging.
me i'd be fine with a gallon of milk, a box of cereal and a bag of chips for good measure.
i'd love to see the joy of cooking list of kitchen must haves though...do share?
Ahh yes. We went through this same phase!! Now... we do love the frozen section of Trader Joes and have learned to always have some staple back up meals on hand.
