Adventures in Eating

Well this is Week 4 of our vegetable deliveries through our CSA (Community-supported Agriculture), and although I have mentioned posting about it a couple of times, I have yet to do that! So here goes...

Our church offered all of us the opportunity to participate in a CSA for the spring, summer and fall of this year. The idea is that anyone who chooses to invests in the farms like you might invest in a company-by buying a share. When it comes time to harvest, you receive your "dividends" in the form of vegetables, meat or both (depending on which farm/s you buy a share in).

In this way, we are able to help support local, organic, small-scale agriculture, while reaping the benefit of farm-fresh, organic, local vegetables. Additionally, since many church members are participating in the CSA, we have been able to share our experiences and exchange recipes.

Already, at the start of week 4, we've had the chance to try lots of things that have been new to us.

Mustard greens, which we did not particularly like. Way too bitter!
Bok choy, which Luke used to make a stirfry.
Radishes and their greens:
Fresh beets, which turned my hands pink:
Kohlrabi, which has been the craziest-looking thing if you ask me. I half expected a Cabbage Patch Kid to hatch out of it.
Beets with goat cheese, kohlrabi and beet greens, and
chicken lettuce wraps with kohlrabi and garlic scapes

We have been having a lot of fun experimenting with our local produce, and are anxious to get our meat next week! If you have any tips on local produce, we are open to ideas for sure.

Good for you! I especailly loved the pic of Luke holding that oddity and you saying that it looked like a Cabbage Patch kid could hatch from it.

Happy, healthy eating!
